Lectors

What is a Lector?

The lector, or minister of the word, is the one who proclaims the scripture readings to the assembled faith community.

Role of the Lector

You are part of the team of those who minister at Liturgy. Our liturgy is the central event in our parish life. The Lector has the task of making God present in the Word for the gathered assembly. God speaks through you as you proclaim the readings.

The Word offers those who listen challenges, comfort and encourages us in our faith journey. We are disciples of Jesus, following him and learning from his teachings.

Within our liturgy, the gathered assembly depends on the lector to make the word come alive for them. This job of making God present is an awesome responsibility and requires commitment and time. Don’t worry. The Spirit of God will guide you in your ministry. You have been called.

A Psalm for Lectors

With my whole heart I seek you; do not let me stray from your commandments. I treasure your word in my heart, so that I may not sin against you. Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes. With my lips I declare all the ordinances of your mouth. I delight in the way of your decrees as much as in all riches. I will meditate on your precepts, and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word. Deal bountifully with your servant, so that I may live and observe your word. Open my eyes, so that I may behold wondrous things out of your law. - Psalm 119

A Prayer for Proclaimers of the Word

Lord, invest me with Your Power as I prepare to proclaim the Marvel of Your Message. I have prepared my readings, I have tried to take within me the meaning of what I am about to read; help me, I ask, to read not just with my lips but with my whole heart and soul.

Lord, make me a hollow reed so that Your Voice will be heard by all who will hear me. Free me of excessive concern over my performance, over the impression I create in this Sacred Action. Convert my feelings of nervousness, turn all my apprehensions into an energy for proclaiming Your Word with power and authority.

May Your Spirit fill me as it fills the holy words that I am about to proclaim. AMEN.

Appropriate dress

We ask all of our liturgical ministers to dress appropriately. Jeans, t-shirts and short skirts are not the ideal dress for this ministry. It is our role to enhance the worship of the assembly. Anything that draws the focus from our ministry to ourselves is inappropriate.
